Doug Hohnstein

Doug Hohnstein was raised in Howick Township, where his youth was spent working on the family farm. From an early age, in a one-room public school house, Doug was inspired by the paintings of Thomson and Harris of the Group of Seven – whose depictions of the real, visceral ruggedness of the outdoors captured his interest – to sketch rural scenes. His works represent happy returns to his past, inviting the viewer to wander into and explore the rugged, rural landscapes and moods of Ontario’s countryside in a bygone era. Through the use of vivid colours, contrasts, cloudscapes, and heavy texturing, Doug recreates in these landscapes the emotions and experiences that the hand of nature originally inspired him.
